SPECIAL GALA CHARITY NIGHT SATURDAY DECEMBER 6th 2003
RUBY WAX presents THE PAUL COX BAND plus SWINDLE
This gala night at Clare Village Hall, Suffolk was in aid of the Rainbow Trust children’s charity. Proceedings were kicked of by Ruby Wax by thanking every body for coming and explain the work of the trust. She also questioning the paternity of the audience, asked why they live so f***ing far from her home in London and generally poked fun of the organisers in particular Paul Spurgeon, this went down well with the receptive crowed.
The music started when Punk Tribute band Swindle from Southend took the stage, this 4 piece outfit that gave it large, performing classics from the Pistols, Clash, etc. finishing with the drummer (Richie Noble) dressed as the Pope singing “My Way” which had the crowed calling for more, which they got. At the end of their set the audience were well up for strutting their stuff.
The Paul Cox Band took the stage Paul and the Band are well known to the good folk of Clare, having taken part in may events there over the years, festivals, dances, etc. this was in fact the 10 anniversary of Paul’s first appearance in the village. They got their set going with “Mr Pitiful” this got everybody on their feet.
There was lots of audience participation in numbers like “ Knock On Wood” and “Mustang Sally”, also included in the set were favourites from Paul’s CD’s(see set list) which gave individual members of the band a chance to take solos which were warm applauded. To close the set the band played “Dance to the Music” but the audience didn’t want the fun to stop, they called them back for two encores.
A fantastic high-energy night two great bands, lot of very happy people and money for The Rainbow Trust.
A success, yes I think so!
